Adopt-A-Library History

Cst. John Kennedy - Founder of the Adopt a Library Literacy Program     This program began in the mid 90's in Northern New Brunswick.  Constable John Kennedy, founder of the program, realized  that the local library was lacking in children's books, so he developed The Adopt-A-Library Literacy Program to help fill the need for new reading materials.

Upon being  transferred to Stellarton,  Nova Scotia, in the spring of 1999,  he soon realized that the sponsoring network he built up had followed him to his new posting.  Seeing the potential of his idea, he contacted the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and soon the  program was in place at all seven library branches in the area. With the help of other RCMP members and Pictou County Policing Agencies, the program began to attract attention.  Once again, sponsors found John and began to mail him items.

Since January 2000, many  sponsors have joined this program, and the list continues to grow.  Presently the total amount of donations made in cash, in kind, and through partnerships for literacy exceeds $1,000,000. As well, the total number of books read tops 90,000.  Last summer 1000 children took part in the fun.  This summer we hope to register even more.

Adopt-A-Library also has directly contributed to the building and renovation of three public library branches. With new children and youth reading areas, good collections and programming spaces, young people have a safe and supportive place to be in their own community. Many of the programs that now take place involve police input and focus on children most at risk.
