Paq'tnkek First Nation is a moderate size Mi'kmaq community and is located about 20-24 km east of Antigonish. The Mi'kmaq of the Paq'tnkek First Nation have deep roots embedded all through out Antigonish County and the surrounding areas. The St Anne's church in Summerside for example has been a part of the Paq'tnkek First Nation since it was first built. It was originally a settlement east of Antigonish, known as the east side of Pomquet until the name was changed by the Legislature of Nova Scotia in 1867. There was an Indian reservation near Summerside and under the direction of Father Vincent de Paul Merle the Mi'kmaq built a chapel at Summerside prior to 1838. This church was probably the precursor of the present St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church which was built in 1867 and is a mission of Heatherton. The Paq'tnkek first Nation has been using the Church annually ever since, for St Anne's and for funerals and every once in awhile a wedding.

As it was for centuries the Mi'kmaq fished, hunted and lived off the land around them and not much has changed since then, only the method in which it is done. Paq'tnkek First Nation and its council are always seeking out new ways to better provide for and help their community grow. Mi'kmaq tradition is that everything is done for the better of the children. It is with this in mind that the community has anticipated tomorrow with the goal to ensure more than just prosperity for their children but an ever improving community and in doing so fulfilling the promise to their ancestors by ensuring the survival of their people.

The Paq'tnkek First Nation invites you to take a look around and get a feel of what our community is and has to offer. From the St Anne's Celebration to the Annual Paqtn'kek First Nation Powwow, Paq'tnkek is a place of progress and culture and welcome all to visit.
