Carmichael Stewart House Family History The house was built in 1880 by Senator James W. Carmichael. J.W. Carmichael was a very prominent citizen who had been born into a prosperous shipbuilding family. He built the home for his son, named James M. Carmichael, as a wedding gift when he married Christian Matheson. The house was later passed on to J.M. Carmichael's daughter, Maria. She married Mr. R.B. Stewart. The Stewarts were the last family to live in the house, and had no heirs. At the time of his death, R.B. Stewart donated the house to the town of New Glasgow. The Pictou County Historical Society opened the house as a museum in 1965, and it has been open since that time. When visiting the museum, you will see photographs of the Carmichael Stewart family, the wedding dresses of both Maria and Christian, a journal of Maria's, the memoirs and law degree of Caroline Carmichael, James M. Carmichael's sister, and many other family treasures.
