Four Feet Up Film and Discussion
An intimate and touching experience of child poverty in one of the richest countries in the world. This film is 46 minutes long and is filmed in Nova Scotia. Twenty years after the House of Commons promised to eliminate poverty among Canadian children, 8 year-old Isaiah is trying hard to grow up healthy, smart and well adjusted despite the odds stacked against him. Isaiah knows he's been categorized as "less fortunate" and his short life has seen more than his share of social workers, food banks and police interventions. His parents struggle to overcome a legacy of stereotypes, abuse and dysfunction and desire more than anything for Isaiah and his siblings to have access to the opportunities they never had. It is open to the public and there will be a short discussion following the film. Sponsored by Children's Place Parent Committee.

The Baby$teps and financial literacy Money Matters programs are free programs offered by the Antigonish Women's Resource Centre. They are available to women and men living in Antigonish County, Guysborough County and the Strait Area of Cape Breton.
Baby$teps
The Baby $teps program aims to help break down the barriers for low- to modest-income families to saving for their children's education after high school, to provide some basic financial literacy training and to assist families in opening RESPs and accessing the government grants that are available to them. The program provides one-on-one assistance to families taking part in the program. Families who cannot contribute to an RESP can still benefit: with the Canada Learning Bond, eligible families can receive up to $2000 (plus interest) per child born in 2004 or later. Parents who can afford to contribute can receive up to $7200 (plus interest) per child through the Canada Education Savings Grant. Please note that I do not sell RESPs, nor am I affiliated with any agent or organization that does.
Financial Literacy – Money Matters
The mandate of the Financial Literacy program at the Antigonish Women's Resource Centre is to provide information and support with issues such as banking, budgeting, spending, saving, credit and credit cards, interest, debt, payday lenders and cheque-cashing services, the basics of investing, etc. Programs support independent decision-making and the strengths and values of participants. Services are available one-on-one or for groups.
