Looking for cemetery. My ancestors were McDonalds who came from Scotland about 1830 and settled in Black Brook, at the end of Eden Lake. Was there a cemetery in this now largely abandoned area? Alex McDonald and later generations are buried in the Moose River Cemetery.
Would appreciate any leads, as on a trip last year, we could not find any trace of Alex's parents in cemeteries along the paved road by Eden Lake.

Guess I will have to put up some of the information my father has from his cousins. It might help with others whose families arrived from Dumfries in the late 1700's on the Hector. There was a William Clark who came from around Galloway and there is still an couple of old family farmhouses near Durham, N.S where my grandfather grew up. I'll try to post a copy of a letter my father has from a cousin who had asked about the family in 1936 and it has all the children from the family 'til that time.
Glad to see that the County is still home to others too.

McDonald/MacDonald (Upper Settlement-East River/Sunny Brae/Bridgeville)
If the following has any pertinence to your family line, I would be interested in hearing from you.
In 1784, a settlement of disbanded soldiers was made further up the river at Upper Settlement-East River. They came to Pictou at the close of the American War and were originally, from the Highlands of Scotland.
The names of these first settlers included John Og McDonald and his family which included sons Duncan, James and Ewen.
"John Og McDonald was born at Glen Urquhart, Scotland By his first wife, Jannet (??) he had Duncan, Alexander, Mary and Christy. By his second wife, Margaret Grant, he had James, Ewen, Ann and Ellen.
Ewen Mor McDonald was John Og's youngest son. He settled Mount Maple Farm in Pictou County and had 8 children; John Mor, Duncan, Elizabeth, Nancy, Margaret, Alexander, Ann, and Ellen"
"Big" John Mor Macdonald was the son of Ewen Mor (Hugh) Macdonald. He married Annie McIntosh, daughter of David McIntosh of Sunny Brae, with whom he had Duncan, Donald, Alexander, Ranald, Ellen, Jane, Mary, Charlie, Hugh, and Samuel. Of those children, 4 boys went west in the gold rush.
Alexander G. Macdonald was the son of John Mor and Aniie McIntosh. Alexander had 8 children. 5 (John Chalmers, Charles Harris, William Sommerville, Octavia [Annie] Sarah, & Jerusha) to Lavinia Harris of Cornwallis, Kings County NS, and 3 (Lavina, Hughena & Benjamin) to Eunice Steadman of Cornwallis, Kings County NS. Lavinia Harris was the daughter of Elijah and Sarah Harris, farmers in Welsford, Kings County Nova Scotia. Eunice Steadman was the daughter of Benjamin Steadman and Eliza Harris of Cornwallis, Kings County Nova Scotia

In August I left my information regarding CAMERON
genealogy. I neglected to look up in the P.W. for a
birth of Jennie Cameron d/o Donald Cameron in 1855.
If possible, I'd appreciate a "look up". I am hoping
to find the mother's name. Thank you.

I am a descendant of the Beaton"s who
sailed on the Sybil in 1852 from St John's,
NewFoundland to the colony of Port Phillip
(Victoria, Aus). I have been trying to trace James
Beaton's parentage in Pictou and feel there is a
good chance that John Beaton, mentioned in the
census of 1817 and 1832 may be a candidate.
I have written two stories recently about the Beaton
family which appear on my website:
http://www.yarranet.net.au/aceweb/eliteracies/dalegenealogy/beaton.htm
and
http://www.yarranet.net.au/aceweb/eliteracies/dalegenealogy/beaton2.htm
I have tried unsuccessfully in the past to contact
various local historians and Beaton researchers in
Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. My fingers crossed
that you may be able to help piecing together the
puzzle.
I wonder if there is a way of accessing James
Beaton's birth certificate in Nova Scotia?
I wonder if John Beaton is his father and whether
that same John Beaton is the little 12 year old boy
who sails to Pictou from Kilmorach, Scotland on the
Dove of 1801?

My wife's cousin's wife was given up for adoption
when she was about 1-2 years old in Boston, MA. She
just learned that the names of her birth parents
were John and Mary (Knockwood) Sapier.
According to adoption papers, they were married in
Pictou about 1943, they had 3 other children before
her, they travelled frequently between Nova Scotia
and Boston and they were Roman Catholics.
On her behalf, I would be interested in any
information you can send me on these individuals and

I am looking for any information on the
descendants of the Ewen CAMERON families of Big
Island, Merigomish.
Any help appreciated.
This starts with the below letter.
Letter written by Duncan Cameron to a Cousin in
Scotland. Transcribed by Terris C. Howard.
Big Island Merigomish
January 31st. 1883
Dear Cousin,
Yours of December 27th Came to hand sometime ago. I
now write to let you know that my father died four
years ago on the 8th June past. The rest of our
family are well at present with the exception of my
mother who is frail. She is very old being almost 90
years of age. The most of our folks are settled at
great distances from here, there is one of my
sisters and my brother living on old farm. Three of
my sisters are living in Prince Edward Island being
married there and their families pretty much grown
up, my oldest sister is living in Cumberland County
about sixty miles from here, her family all grown up
and two more of my sisters are married in this
neighbourhood. My elder brother has been dead for a
great length of time and is family are all abroad
with the exception of one son who is at home. So by
this you will understand that people in this country
are difficult to travel as well as those in
Scotland. I have been married nearly fifteen years
and have got a family of three sons & three
daughters. Crops with us have been but very
middling. Last Summer was unusually wet and potato
blight has been pretty scary in this place, the
winter is very cold so far this winter but you folks
in Scotland have no idea of the Severity of a Nova
Scotia winter. I can not think of any news that
would prove of much interest to you at the present
time but if you answer this and wish to open up a
correspondence as I trust you will, I can give you
any information you wish about this country ––– With
kindest love to you & yours, I remain Your Cousin,
Duncan Cameron
P.S. When you write you will please address
Duncan Cameron
Big Island Merigomish

The system used here is a modified Henry System,
which is the same except that letters of the
alphabet are used instead of numbers. Also, each
succeeding generation is indented. This ensures that
you can quickly and easily tell how every individual
is related to another individual just by looking at
their reference letters. Example of the modified
Henry System used in this and the following charts.
A CARMICHAEL, Donald - 1st Generation
AB CARMICHAEL, Patrick 'Peter' - 2nd Generation,
2nd Child
ABF CARMICHAEL, Patrick 'Peter' - 3rd Generation,
6th Child
ABFE CARMICHAEL, Mary - 4th Generation, 5th Child
Note: The letters "I" and "J" are not used in the
alpha designators shown in these charts for clarity.

I am a member of the Pictou County Roots Society
since July 2002.
I have found my GGrandfather, Donald MCDONALD and
his, wife Jessie MCKINNON MCDONALD, in both the 1871
and 1881 census of Canada. It shows Donald b in Nova
Scotia abt 1838 and Jessie b in PEI abt 1839. They
were married 25 May 1857 in Albion Mines. In 1871
they lived in Middle River Div 2; in 1881 they lived
in Westville. Donald was a Miner. They had following
children: Laughlin b 1856 Mary Jane b 1860 Catherine
b 1862 Jessie A. b 1864 d 1947 James D b 1868
Abigail b 1871 Maude b ? Arlline b ? John (Jack) b
1974 William Daniel b 1876 (My Grandfather) They
were Scot Presbyterians Jessie MCDONALD remarried in
1902 after the death of Donald, to James ROY, also a
miner, from Westville. Jessie died 16th June 1915
and is buried in St Phillips Cemetery in
Westville,[had been Mt Carmel Presbyterian] The
family lived in Westville, Sydney CB, and Middle
River areas. I would like to know when Donald
McDonald died and where he is buried; also where he
was born in Nova Scotia. I know there are a
gazillion McDonalds but hope there might be some
info for me in the Ritchie or the P. Witness docs.
Jessie ROY died 16 June 1915 in Boston, was buried
in Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The
cemetery is named St. Phillips, but had been Mt.
Carmel Presbyterian. She was 75 years old at death.
The family lived in Middle River, and in the
Westville, Nova Scotia areas. Donald was a miner. In
the 1901 Pictou County Census there is only one
listing: Westville #3, Home #65, Jessie McDonald
listed as "Housekeeper". Believe that Donald died
between 1881 and 1901, but have no other
information. Thanks in advance for your help. Warren
MacDonald in Jupiter, Florida

I am seeking information on my great
grand-father, Capt. John G. English and his
ancestors. He was born c.1820, died 30 Aug 1891. The
1871 census reports of his family "All born N.S.
Betsy (his wife) of Scottish origin; others Irish".
Also, is there a connection between John G.
English and (1) Patrick English in the Egerton area
of Pictou County who had a son Michael born in New
Glasgow in 1831 and/or (2) William English, born
around 1830 in the Thorburn area?
Any help you can provide will be most
appreciated!

I'm pretty sure my ggg-grandfather Kenneth
McKenzie was on the Hector in 1773 (a boy at that
time). While some of his family probably stayed in
Nova Scotia, he migrated to the US between 1780 and
1790. I know so little about him and the family who
stayed behind. Are there any records available that
might help in my search? (His childrens' names were:
John, Mary, William, Colin, Sarah, and Jane; I'm
guessing that this fits with the naming tradition.)
I welcome contact with any McKenzie's who might
share this common ancestry!
