Presbyterian Witness
Vital Statistics from:
THE PRESBYTERIAN WITNESS, AND EVANGELICAL ADVOCATE
by J & S McCormick
Middleton, Nova Scotia
This book began publication in Halifax on Saturday, January 8, 1848 with James Barnes as Editor. It provides a great wealth of material for genealogists and researchers and for this reason it was felt an index of the vital statistics found therein would be useful. The weekly religious newspaper continued in publication for seventy years. It was at first connected exclusively with the Free (Presbyterian) Church, but information was by no means limited to this denomination. In January 1856 Rev. Robert Murray of the Free Church and Charles Robson, Elder of the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia took over the operation of the paper and enlarged it by creating two sections - religious and secular. Usually the vital statistics were placed in the "Secular Department". but on occasion they appeared in the religious section; when this was the case an (R) will be found following the page number in the applicable listings. By 1865 the two sections became one and the newspaper generally consisted of eight pages.
The vital statistics are indexed and arranged in 2 sets of 4:
