The Town of
New Glasgow Marketing/Communications Department in
cooperation with the New Glasgow Heritage Committee and the
Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library is currently developing a
virtual cenotaph.
The virtual cenotaph will commemorate and honor all New
Glasgow veterans and the database collected will also become
part of an Honor Roll that will be placed in the Town Hall.
In order to assure all names are accurately collected, the
members of the public are invited to visit and to review the
list presented as well as links to other historical
information on local veterans.
New Glasgow Mayor Ann MacLean says this project will “enable
the Town of New Glasgow to honour the service of New Glasgow
veterans worldwide as now people located across the globe
will be able to view the names of New Glasgow veterans who
served our country on line as well as contribute to the
database.”
“ We are especially pleased that this project will
compliment the Stewart Street Heritage project which is
nearing completion, as well as the Carmichael Park cenotaphs
and will add to the Town’s recognition of all veterans,”
said Mayor MacLean. “Also we are not limited by bricks and
mortar and the site can be a lasting tribute to all New
Glasgow veterans who served for our freedom. It is a
community project that will continue to develop as more
information is gathered.”
New Glasgow's Marketing and Communications Director Kim
Dickson explains that much work has been done behind the
scenes to get the project up and running. "Heritage
Committee representatives, Virginia Garrett and Bill Paris,
have worked diligently to collect information from the local
churches and the Library staff have worked to create a
template for the public to review and add to the database,"
said Ms. Dickson. " Other members of the community such as
Doug Stallard have also provided a wealth of information. In
addition to the churches which often have memorials in honor
of veterans, information was gathered from the cenotaph in
the Carmichael Park and data also gathered from the New
Glasgow Library's resources."
Ms. Dickson invites the public to review the database and to
offer any relevant information. |
