a Community Access Program Trainer was hired (in partnership by)
Human
Resources Development Canada and the Pictou
Antigonish Regional
Library to work at the Ward One CAP Site. The site consists of
two Dell "Pentium lll" computers with a Hi-Speed "M-Power" Internet connection.
One Dell "Celeron" computer with a built-in CD Writer
(burner). A Sony digital camera and a Canon Color Printer. What is the Community Access Program
(CAP)? The Community Access Program (CAP) is an Industry Canada initiative developed
primarily for people in rural and remote communities. CAP Sites will give
people affordable, if not, free public access to the internet, and a way to
communicate while developing their computer skills. Communities will also
benefit, as the internet provides a unique opportunity for job creation and
economic development. The Community Access Program was designed by Industry Canada to establish
5,000 access sites in rural and remote communities, and up to 5,000 access sites
in urban communities by March 31st, 2000. In partnership with communities,
Industry Canada provides matching grants of up to $30,000 to purchase computers
and programming materials. The computers are set up in public areas like
libraries, schools and community centers; these sites are open to
everyone. To date, over 4,000 community access points have been
established in rural communities. To learn more about

Services Provided NOTE: each training session lasts up to one
hour per day. Sessions are done individually ( 1-on-1) or within a small group. The computers can also be used for one's personal
use. For example; writing word documents such as letters and resumes or
browsing the Internet.
