Ward One Social &
Recreation Centre (History)
The Ward One Social & Recreation Centre
originated to stimulate interest and to promote and encourage good wholesome forms of sporting and recreational activities for
citizens of the
Ward One community. The centre consists of a Board of Directors
who oversee all programming and functions that take place within the centre.
It is also a vehicle through which Ward One residents designed to encourage
fellowship, develop leadership skills, and to maintain good clean sportsmanship. Originally located on the
corner of Marsh Street and Merigomish Road this facility was
able to meet the needs of the community. However, as time passed and the centre
was utilized by increasing numbers of people, problems arose. The streets
around the centre were quite busy and as a result, noise levels became a problem. Also with families using the
centre, problems
arose with the presence of children near the busy streets. The bottom line
was that as the community grew larger, the needs of the community
changed and the original Ward One Recreation Centre was no longer able to meet
the needs of the community. Due to these problems (during the late 1970's)
the centre had been moved to a new location.
Now located on the corner of Tremont and Brother Street on
9.5 acres of property, the new Ward One Recreation Centre had been created in a
building obtained by the Town of New Glasgow from Maritime Tel & Tel.
This building was then renovated and expanded upon and became the centre that
still exists today. (Click on a picture for a larger image) |
