(From notes prepared in “ Historical Sketches – Westville Churches”, prepared for the 75th anniversary of the town in 1969.)
From the moment Scottish Settlers arrived in Acadia Village, as Westville was referred to in its early days, until the present day, religion has been a major influence in the community. The church has provided both religious and social fellowship and leadership.
As each church became established, plans for a permanent building were quickly drawn up and each congregation attempted to provide a suitable place of worship and a place for social gatherings.
The Westville churches have enjoyed worshipping in their own building with their unique forms of worship, but a growing sense of working together has evolved as well.
Ecumenical services have become more common. Since 1948, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian and St. Paul United have joined for summer services. Special ecumenical services are held each year for the World Day of Prayer, the Canadian Bible Society, and Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
In 1967 during centennial year, a special ecumenical service was held at St. Bees’ on January 1 and an ecumenical service was held in Victoria Park July 2.
In 1969, the seventy-fifth anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Westville was celebrated with an ecumenical church service held at the Church of the Holy Name.
