Ladies’ Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 35, Westville
The founding meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 35, Westville, was held in the Knights of Pythias Hall on September 17, 1931. Assisting were Major Warren Jollymore and Rev. John Service of Branch 34, New Glasgow, and Mrs. Marian Watkins (later Mrs. Graydon Seaman), of Branch 34, Ladies’ Auxiliary. Mrs. Murray MacQuarrie was nominated president; at a second meeting Mrs. William Morris was nominated vice-president and Mrs. Malcolm MacQuarrie, secretary-treasurer.
The Auxiliary met monthly at the homes of the members or the Knights of Pythias hall. The Legion purchased the Methodist Memorial Church on the corner of South Main and Court streets on February 19, 1934, thus affording the Auxiliary permanent headquarters.
The charter members were Mesdames M. MacQuarrie, C.A. MacQuarrie, G. Hubley, A. Roy, J Chapman, A.A. MacDonald, W. Morris, T. Partington, B. Horne, and R. MacCoull; Misses G. Madore, B. Hatfield, V. Hatfield, Mesdames S. MacAllister, E. Hatfield.
The present Legion building on Spring Garden Road was erected in 1976- 77, and officially opened June 4, 1977. Officers were President Mrs. Joan MacPherson, 1st Vice-President Mrs. Mildred Rumley; 2nd Vice-President Mrs. Elda Deagle; Secretary Mrs. Isaline Hanson; and Treasurer Mrs. Dorothy Lannon.
The main purpose of the Ladies’ Auxiliary is to support the parent branch, especially on Remembrance Day. Other activities include visits to those bereaved, hospitalized, or ill at home; visits and treats to retired members; semi-annual social functions for senior citizens; awarding prizes at school graduations, which consists of a special bursary in memory of Mrs. Anna MacDonald, a past-president and chaplain for many years.
