Who perished n the Drummond Colliery Explosion of May 13, 1873.
Oh!  What a sudden shock they in a movement fell
No time allowed to bid their friends farewell
Weep not for them, nor sorrow take
But love their families for their sake
            Be yea also ready

 The Miners’ Monument

    The Miners’ Monument on Drummond Road was erected by the employees of the Drummond Colliery on October 22, 1891, to commemorate the miners who lost their lives in the May 13, 1873, explosion.  The monument was built by William MacKenzie and the carving was done by James King.

The inscription includes the following:
