The Order of the Eastern Star
Westville Chapter No. 24 Order of the Eastern Star was instituted on November 17, 1947, the first to be organized under the newly formed Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which men and women belong.
The first officers were Minnie E. MacQuarrie, Worthy Matron, and John A. Murray, Worthy Patron.
Of the 43 Charter members, five remain. One, the first secretary, Mabel Johnson, has filled this office for 35 years and currently serves as Grand Treasurer. Diane Hayman is currently Associate Grand Matron.
The best-known special project is “ESTARL”, coined from Eastern Star Training awards for Religious Leadership. The money assists men and women studying for the ministry and church music. A student need not have Masonic or Eastern Star affiliation to apply.
Lauchie Johnson served as the 11th Worthy Grand Patron in 1958.
Helen J. Connors, Past Grand Matron, was held her session, “The Golden Wings”, in Westville in 1977. She later served a three-year appointment as General Grand Chapter Committee Member on the Heart Foundation.
J. Roy Hale, Past Patron and Deputy Grand Matrons, grand chapter officers and committee members, also Grand Representatives, traveling to points in Canada and U.S.A. as goodwill ambassadors.
