This Westville Hockey team of
1905 or 1906 is a perfect example of the early game- very
little to work with in terms of equipment and roster size
but with boundless pride for their sport, team and town.

Sporting Career of George Dawson
George entered athletics in 1903, placing second in a five-mile road race in New Glasgow. He would later go on to defeat such stars as Rodgers and Downey. He was also a member of the Maritime team that competed in Montreal’s Daily Star Race.
George found success in other sports as well. In 1906 he played on the Westville cricket team that won the Maritime title. In 1909 he was captain of Westville’s league champion hockey team. The same year he played center field for the Pictou County champion baseball team, The Westville Miners. The team repeated as champions the following year.
George promoted sports and trained many young athletes. He was an all-around athlete in every sense of the word.
